The first full workshop of The Book and the Sword: The Bible in the Experience and Legacy of the Great War began today in Munich. The workshop will examine the ways in which biblical scholarship contributed to the war effort and the ways in which the war altered scholarly perspectives on the Bible. Papers will address subjects such as the use of the psalms and the role of the Ten Commandments, biblical scholarship and the war in France, Germany and Great Britain, and the contributions of scholars such as Caspar René Gregory, Adolf von Harnack, Rudolf Kittel and William Sanday.
